Bungie Marathon Patch Fixes Popular Grappler Movement Glitch & Map Balance

The Grappler character can no longer exploit an unfair movement bug.

Bungie has rolled out a new update for its shooter Marathon, marking a significant step toward achieving long-term game balance. This patch not only addresses existing bugs but also outlines the developers’ strategy for future game evolution.

A central change is the removal of a widely known movement exploit. This refers to a mechanic that allowed the Grappler character to retain momentum while using her grappling hook. Despite its popularity among experienced players, Bungie deemed it detrimental to fair gameplay.

In the official patch notes, Bungie clarified its decision: according to their design philosophy, rapid and aggressive movement across the map should always come with a tangible cost—whether it’s ability expenditure, overheating, or increased risk. The developers also confirmed their commitment to continue eliminating similar exploits in the future.

Furthermore, the update includes adjustments to the ‘Outpost’ map. The entrance to the central zone via the damaged wing has been reopened. This passage was previously blocked due to balance issues, as players could enter too easily and quickly. Bungie states that an appropriate solution has now been found, and access to this area is restored.
