Console Gaming Poised to Become a Luxury: Analysts Predict PlayStation 6 Could Cost 50% More Than PS5 Pro

Sony has already implemented price increases for its consoles across all regions.

Recent price hikes for Sony’s consoles, including the PlayStation 5 and its Pro variant, may signal an even more expensive future for next-generation gaming systems.

Matt Piscatella, an analyst at Circana, noted that while price increases were anticipated, their magnitude exceeded expectations. He suggests that the current market dynamics introduce significant uncertainty regarding both the timeline and pricing for the next console iteration, potentially the PlayStation 6.

Joost van Dreunen, a New York University professor and industry researcher, attributes these developments to U.S. economic policies, specifically import tariffs. He points out that this has driven up component costs, with prices for DRAM and NAND projected to increase by 80-90% starting in early 2026. Van Dreunen believes the market is trending towards a future where $1,000 consoles become standard, effectively positioning console gaming hardware as a luxury item.

Serkan Toto, CEO of the consulting firm Kantan Games, interprets the current price adjustments as Sony’s strategy to brace for ongoing market instability. He estimates that one version of the PlayStation 6 could potentially retail for up to $999. However, he also suggests that Sony is likely maintaining flexibility to offer potential discounts if market conditions become more favorable.
