Crimson Desert’s World Detail Impresses Even Red Dead Redemption 2 Artist: Realistic Water and Real-Time Construction Stand Out

The developers have dedicated significant attention to the detailed elaboration of the game world, creating an immersive experience for players.

As players explore the expansive world of Crimson Desert, they consistently notice the high level of detail meticulously crafted by the developers.

A particular point of interest is the dynamic construction system: instead of finished objects appearing instantly, buildings and structures progress through several visible stages of erection, starting from the foundation. This gradual process enhances realism.

This innovative and dynamic construction system applies not only to regular buildings but also extends to the creation of statues and other significant world elements.

The water in Crimson Desert also stands out for its incredible realism and detail. This remarkable achievement was even noted by an environment artist who previously contributed to Red Dead Redemption 2, who thoroughly studied this feature and shared their observations.

Crimson Desert’s developers opted for a ‘live simulation’ approach for water, departing from conventional methods. Unlike most games that rely on pre-baked flow maps—which dictate water’s movement direction and require re-baking with every environmental change (e.g., moving a stone)—Crimson Desert’s system dynamically simulates water, avoiding these limitations and offering greater flexibility.

Traditionally, in video games, rivers are often depicted as smooth, uniform ‘inclined ribbons.’ However, in the real world, rivers naturally consist of a series of cascades and gentle sections, and this more authentic approach has been faithfully implemented in the game.

Just like real water, which always seeks a horizontal level, water in Crimson Desert replicates this natural behavior with impressive fidelity. The artist, exploring the river using ReShade, demonstrated that it genuinely consists of various nuanced sections: alternating cascades and calmer, gently sloping areas, showcasing a deep commitment to environmental realism.
