Disney Eyes Epic Games Acquisition Amid Fortnite Creator’s Struggles

While Epic Games has long prided itself on its independence, recent challenges faced by the creators of Fortnite have sparked a wave of rumors within the gaming industry. Following successful acquisitions of giants like Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, The Walt Disney Company appears to have set its sights on the video game market.

According to GameSpot, citing well-known technology reporter Alex Heath, a significant portion of Disney’s leadership has expressed serious interest in purchasing Epic Games. This interest is amplified by a difficult period for Epic Games, which recently announced over a thousand job cuts due to declining Fortnite revenues and an urgent need to reduce expenses.

“I know for a fact that senior managers at Disney want to buy Epic Games and are simply waiting for the right moment. I believe that if Epic ever were to sell, if it decided to give up its independence, Disney would be the most natural home for it for many reasons.”

Kevin Mayer, a former Disney executive and ex-CEO of TikTok, shared his perspective:

“Epic or another significant asset from the gaming sector would be an excellent addition to The Walt Disney Company’s resources.”

A key figure in this scenario is Disney’s new head, Josh D’Amaro, known for his passion for gaming. He previously oversaw a $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games for collaborative projects within the Fortnite platform. These developments indicate Disney’s strong intention to aggressively expand its presence in the gaming industry.
