According to industry analyst Joost van Dreunen, Epic Games, despite the impressive success of its flagship game Fortnite, is currently facing significant difficulties.
The expert began closely scrutinizing the studio’s situation following extensive layoffs that affected over a thousand employees. The situation was further exacerbated by a public scandal involving a critically ill worker, which forced the company to quickly take steps to restore its public reputation. Van Dreunen casts doubt on Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney’s assertions that these layoffs were unrelated to AI development.
Dreunen suggests that companies outside the U.S. are already actively implementing generative AI and exploring its potential, while Epic Games has yet to demonstrate notable progress in this crucial area.

The analyst also points to the influence of external factors: the rising cost of living and an unfair distribution of rights among platform holders. These issues collectively contribute to reduced profits for Epic and increased expenses due to numerous ongoing legal disputes.
“Empires don’t fall instantly… They rot from the inside out, slowly, until one day the walls come down, and everyone is surprised. We are somewhere in the middle of that process now.”
According to van Dreunen, while this assessment may be painful for Epic, the studio must adapt to these changing conditions to maintain Fortnite’s viability and the sustained interest of its vast audience.
