Former Destiny 2 Developer Reveals Bungie’s Biggest Mistake: The “Content Vault” That Irreparably Harmed the Game

A former Destiny 2 developer has voiced concerns about a significant mistake made by Bungie, an error that players haven’t forgiven years later. The crux of the problem lies in the removal of previously paid-for content from the game with the launch of the “Beyond Light” expansion.

This contentious process is known as the “Content Vault” within the Destiny community. Removed assets, including the “Red War” campaign, the “Curse of Osiris” and “Warmind” expansions, several raids, and even the Forsaken campaign, were metaphorically placed into a “vault,” becoming inaccessible to players.

Max Nichols, a former Destiny developer, elaborated on the content “vaulting” process and his involvement on his personal website. Nichols dedicated over 9 years to Bungie, contributing to the creation of new missions and modes, updating existing content, and participating in the Content Vault initiative.

According to Nichols, the “Beyond Light” expansion introduced a significant engine update that was fundamentally incompatible with all existing game materials. This incompatibility necessitated a laborious process of re-migrating content, a task with considerable labor costs and requiring the recruitment of numerous new staff members. Nichols personally oversaw the hiring of 20 junior technical designers to address this challenge.
