While Guerrilla Games is actively developing a multiplayer project and Horizon 3, the progress of Horizon Steel Frontiers remains a topic of interest. Despite its deep ties to the Horizon franchise, the game is not currently slated for a PlayStation 5 release.
In a recent interview, Jonghee “JJ” Jin, head of NC America, confirmed the project’s strong collaboration with both Guerrilla Games and Sony. The original creators of the Horizon series are closely monitoring the MMO’s development to ensure it meets the franchise’s high quality standards and lore consistency. At GDC 2026, Jin provided an optimistic update on its development:
“Work is progressing very well. The team is working closely with Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the game itself looks truly magnificent – it’s a beautiful, impressive world where humanity, nature, and technology collide.”
Jin expressed confidence that the developers are crafting a “strong MMO experience.” This reassurance is particularly noteworthy given earlier rumors of the project’s potential cancellation in early 2025. Currently, only cross-play between PC and mobile devices has been confirmed, but the studio head suggested that other platforms might still be a possibility:
“The game was announced with cross-play between mobile devices and PC – that’s all I can confirm right now. Who knows, there might be something more.”
Players will journey to the expansive Deadlands region, drawing inspiration from Arizona and New Mexico. Instead of controlling Aloy, players will create their own custom hunters. The game promises exciting features such as raids, cooperative machine hunting, an open world environment, and advanced social systems. While an official release date has not yet been announced, further news regarding playtests is anticipated in 2026.
