Karl Urban, the actor portraying Johnny Cage in the upcoming film “Mortal Kombat 2,” has expressed strong conviction that the sequel will surpass all previous video game adaptations. The actor shared his optimism during a panel at Emerald City Comic-Con.
Urban described the filming process as a “fantastic experience” and highlighted that initial audience feedback from early screenings was overwhelmingly positive. He was particularly impressed by the enthusiastic reaction from the public at New York Comic Con.
“We showed a small clip at New York Comic-Con, and I’ve never encountered anything like it in terms of audience reaction. I think they’ll be pleased. In my opinion, this is probably the best video game adaptation that has ever come out. Honestly, there have been some that didn’t quite succeed, but this one is just a bomb – and a bomb in the best sense of the word. So I’m looking forward to you all seeing it.”
The storyline of the second installment will focus on a critical confrontation between the champions of Earthrealm, now joined by Johnny Cage, and the formidable Shao Kahn. Their mission is to put an end to his tyranny, which threatens the very existence of Earthrealm.
Familiar faces return to the cast, including Josh Lawson (Kano), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Chin Han (Shang Tsung), and Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion). New additions feature Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Tati Gabrielle (Jade), and Damon Herriman (Quan Chi). Simon McQuoid is once again at the helm as director, with Jeremy Slater penning the screenplay.
The highly anticipated global premiere of “Mortal Kombat 2” is scheduled for May 6, 2026.
