Asian studio LightSpeed Studios has unveiled its unique approach to game development, asserting that attempting to appeal to everyone ultimately leads to no one being pleased. At GDC 2026, LightSpeed Studios, a division of Tencent, announced a new initiative to create original intellectual property, focusing on developing its own universes. This strategic shift, spearheaded by creative director Feng Zhu and motion capture manager Christine Gallagher, marks the studio’s evolution from mobile hits like PUBG Mobile to ambitious AAA projects, including Last Sentinel and a new action game directed by Hideaki Itsuno (known for Dragon’s Dogma and Devil May Cry).
The studio draws inspiration from Hollywood production processes but emphasizes a fundamental distinction: while cinema offers a fixed experience, games are shaped by player interactivity, making gameplay the cornerstone of their development.
A core principle at LightSpeed is the “90/10 formula,” where 80-90% of content is grounded in reality, with the remainder being creative interpretation. According to Zhu, this approach helps manage timelines and budgets, making games more accessible and compelling.
Feng Zhu specifically highlighted that universal design often proves ineffective: “A product designed for 100 million people often pleases no one.” Instead, LightSpeed focuses on crafting deep narratives and memorable characters, aiming to evoke a strong emotional response within a niche audience, which they believe will ultimately lead to broader recognition.
