“Mortal Kombat 2” Set to Be the Longest Film in the Franchise, Runtime Revealed

The cinematic adaptation of Mortal Kombat is gearing up for a more ambitious and expanded sequel, poised to surpass its predecessor in length and scope.

The highly anticipated action film, “Mortal Kombat 2,” is officially slated to become the longest movie in the history of the acclaimed video game franchise. According to details released by AMC theaters, the sequel’s confirmed runtime will be 116 minutes, a slight but notable increase from the 110 minutes of the 2021 installment.

While a mere six-minute difference might initially seem negligible, for a project featuring an extensive and growing cast, this additional time could prove more significant than it appears. Director Simon McQuoid previously hinted that the sequel’s scope expanded considerably as the first film garnered strong viewership on streaming platforms, ultimately enabling the team to craft what he described as a grand summer blockbuster. Karl Urban, who joins the cast in a new role, has even gone so far as to call the film “the best video game adaptation in history.”

The sequel will pick up directly after the intense events of the first film, following the banishment of Shang Tsung, and promises to escalate the conflict to a dangerous new level: the champions of Earthrealm must now prepare to confront the formidable Shao Kahn.

Fan-favorite actors Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Josh Lawson are among those set to reprise their roles. Additionally, the film will introduce iconic characters such as Kitana, portrayed by Adeline Rudolph, along with other beloved figures from the rich lore of the series.

“Mortal Kombat 2” is currently scheduled to premiere on May 8, 2026. Furthermore, intriguing hints from producer Todd Garner suggest that a script for a potential third installment is already prepared, indicating ambitious long-term plans for the franchise.
