New Lawsuit Against Ubisoft: The Crew Server Shutdown Sparks Consumer Rights Debate

Ubisoft continues to face an increasing number of legal challenges.

A new lawsuit against Ubisoft has recently come to light, filed by the French consumer rights association UFC-Que Choisir. The lawsuit stems from the shutdown of servers for the online racing game, The Crew. The well-known activists from Stop Killing Games, who advocate for game preservation, assisted in preparing the claim.

UFC-Que Choisir seeks a landmark court ruling on a crucial question:

Does the purchase of a video game—whether in physical or digital form—grant players the right to use the game, independent of the publisher’s will and permission?

Following the server shutdown, The Crew ceased to function entirely, as the developers had not provided an offline mode (which was later introduced by modders). UFC-Que Choisir contends that Ubisoft violated fundamental consumer rights by effectively depriving players of their purchased property—a functional copy of The Crew.
