Nintendo Not Planning to Turn ‘Mario’ into ‘The Avengers’ – Super Smash Bros. Movie Not in Development

Cameos featured in the animated film “Super Mario: The Galactic Movie” have sparked questions regarding the future direction of the Nintendo cinematic universe.

However, the appearance of these cameos, which included Fox McCloud from the Star Fox series, in “Super Mario: The Galactic Movie” does not indicate that Nintendo is preparing a Super Smash Bros. film or moving towards unifying its diverse cast of heroes into a single cinematic project.

Shigeru Miyamoto clarified this stance in an interview with Polygon, emphasizing the company’s commitment to focusing on individual character stories. He stated that a scenario where all Nintendo characters assemble for one film is improbable. Nevertheless, his long-standing principle still holds: Pikmin characters can make an appearance in any project, while other character cameos are used judiciously to “add a touch of flavor.”

Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, affirmed this approach. He explained that his studio is not developing a long-term strategy involving franchise planning years in advance, unlike Marvel Studios with its cinematic universe and films such as “The Avengers.” Instead, creative decisions are made dynamically during the production process, prioritizing what best serves a particular scene or moment.

“Super Mario: The Galactic Movie” premiered on April 1st, with its release in Russian cinemas scheduled for April 11th.
