Nintendo’s ‘welcome offer’ for the Switch 2’s built-in voice chat system, GameChat, concludes on March 31st. Starting April 1st, users will need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to access this communication feature.
GameChat represents a significant advancement for the Switch 2, integrating a microphone and voice system directly into the console itself. This functionality is easily activated by pressing the ‘C’ button on the right Joy-Con. It marks a substantial upgrade from the original Switch, which required a separate mobile application for voice communication.
For the vast majority of players, this change may go largely unnoticed, as online multiplayer typically already necessitates a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. However, a notable aspect of this update is that GameChat will now be a paid feature even for games that offer free multiplayer modes without requiring an online subscription.
This introduces an additional barrier to accessing voice chat in such free-to-play titles, a restriction that did not exist previously. At this time, Nintendo has not provided any alternative communication solutions for users who do not have a Switch Online subscription.
