An early development build of Grand Theft Auto IV recently surfaced, revealing mysterious files related to zombie content. Dataminers discovered animations, as well as icons for pickup bonuses and weapons, leading to widespread speculation within the community that a zombie mini-game or mode might have been cut from the final release. This discovery sparked hopes among some players that modders could potentially restore such a “game mode.”
The existence of these peculiar assets prompted fans to reach out to Obbe Vermeij, the former technical director of Rockstar North, for clarification regarding the supposed “zombie mode.”
Vermeij explained that these files were simply remnants of experimental work by the game’s artists. He noted that at the time, artists frequently attempted to integrate zombie themes into various projects, but these concepts rarely evolved into significant game features.
“I don’t recall there being zombies in [Grand Theft Auto IV]. The artists were always trying to put zombies somewhere, but it never went very far.”
