Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator behind iconic series like Mario and Zelda, has articulated an ambitious new vision for one of his cherished franchises. He openly shared his “mission”: to significantly expand the presence of Pikmin across Nintendo’s diverse product portfolio, moving beyond just video games.
In a recent interview, Miyamoto emphasized his desire to deeply integrate Pikmin into the company’s entire ecosystem. His explicit goal is to “embed Pikmin into every available Nintendo product,” irrespective of its specific format or medium.
Early indicators of this strategic shift are already evident. The charming Pikmin creatures have made appearances in the Super Nintendo World theme parks and even had a cameo in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” This push is particularly noteworthy because while the Pikmin series is beloved by many, it has not historically achieved the widespread popularity of Nintendo’s flagship franchises. Despite this, Miyamoto has consistently championed Pikmin as a pivotal project throughout his career, actively working to enhance its brand recognition.
The Pikmin series, known for its unique real-time strategy gameplay, first launched in 2001. The most recent installment, Pikmin 4, has become the most successful release in the franchise’s history. Miyamoto’s statement clearly signals a future direction: to transform Pikmin into a major media brand, extending its reach far beyond its gaming roots to include films and various other forms of entertainment under the Nintendo umbrella.
