The developers of Slay the Spire 2 have officially confirmed there are no plans to implement microtransactions in the game. This decision stands even amidst playful “threats” from fans eager to purchase any available additional content.
During an interview with Destructoid, coinciding with the game’s Early Access launch, Casey Yano, co-founder of Mega Crit (the studio behind Slay the Spire 2), shared some insights into the project’s future development plans.
Yano emphasized that Slay the Spire 2 will be free of any paid additional content, as the team “hates microtransactions.” Despite “many players threatening to buy any cosmetic items we ever release,” the developers aim to ensure equal access to all content for everyone. Thus, the only required expense will be the purchase of the game itself.
Nevertheless, the studio plans to regularly expand the game as it progresses towards its full release (version 1.0). Yano clarified that the current Early Access version “lacks a lot of content,” so Mega Crit will focus on introducing “pure content” – new mechanics, game cards, and other elements that directly enhance gameplay.
The developers also actively support the modding community. Yano noted that Slay the Spire 2’s flexible architecture allows for modifying significant portions of the code, opening up extensive possibilities for creating custom modifications. The team is working to simplify the modding process, though there’s no information yet about a potential release of dedicated modding tools.
Regarding the development roadmap, Yano chose not to disclose its details. He explained that the team is working on the game in “real-time” and fears that frequent adjustments to plans might result in players being unable to keep track of all changes.
