Sony has inadvertently proven that porting its console blockbusters to PC is not merely a gesture to players, but also a highly profitable business venture.
According to recent data uncovered by analyst Timur222, Sony’s PlayStation PC division has transformed from a niche venture generating $50 million into a significant revenue stream, pulling in $300 million in just three years (2021–2023). This clearly demonstrates a strong appetite among PC users for games originally released on PlayStation platforms.
This impressive sum exclusively accounts for single-player titles sold across platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, specifically naming God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part I, and Uncharted. It’s important to note that these figures do not include the subsequent success of live-service games, such as Helldivers 2, nor new releases from Bungie studio.
Despite recent online rumors suggesting Sony might intentionally scale back on releasing single-player games for PC, these substantial figures cast doubt on the logic of such a decision. The strategic experiment, which began with Horizon Zero Dawn, has undeniably blossomed into a significant revenue stream.
The lingering question, however, is whether this $300 million outcome is considered satisfactory by the Japanese giant, or if their internal expectations were even higher.
