The upcoming animated project in the “Star Wars” universe is set to premiere next week, but its future has already been determined.
Disney+ and Lucasfilm have announced the early renewal of the animated series “Star Wars: Darth Maul — Shadow Lord” for a second season, even before its premiere. The first season kicks off on April 6th with two episodes, signaling the studios’ confidence in its success and long-term storytelling plans.
The series’ narrative picks up one year after the events of “The Clone Wars” finale. Darth Maul, having recovered from his defeat and the loss of his former influence, seeks to regain power and rebuild his criminal syndicate. He is aided in this endeavor by his new apprentice, Devon Isaru, a Force-sensitive Twi’lek woman.
Sam Witwer returns to voice Darth Maul, actively participating in the project’s development beyond just vocal performance. According to Athena Portillo, Vice President of Lucasfilm Animation, Witwer made significant contributions to refining the script, ensuring a deeper exploration of the character’s persona. The voice cast also includes Wagner Moura, Richard Ayoade, and Dennis Haysbert.
Episodes will be released in pairs weekly. The first season will consist of 10 episodes, with the finale scheduled for May 4th.
