Once again, mixed critical reception did not hinder Nintendo and Illumination from dominating the box office.
“Super Mario: Galactic Cinema” is enjoying a robust global theatrical run. In its initial five days, the animated feature amassed approximately $373 million worldwide, with $190 million originating from North American (US and Canada) screenings. This not only positions it as the highest-grossing opening of the year but also ranks it among the top five-day box office debuts ever recorded.
The sequel’s earnings slightly trail those of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” from 2023. The predecessor garnered around $387.8 million globally within a similar timeframe. This minor difference is quite common for follow-up films.
Notably, these substantial box office figures were achieved despite underwhelming critical reviews. The film holds a Metacritic score of 35 and a Rotten Tomatoes critic rating hovering around 40%. In contrast, audience reception has been significantly warmer, mirroring the sentiment for the first installment. It boasts an A- CinemaScore and approximately a 90% user rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Analysts have highlighted the unique audience composition. According to Comscore, nearly two-thirds of its U.S. viewership consisted of infrequent moviegoers—individuals who visit cinemas only two to three times annually. Engaging this crucial demographic positions “Galactic Cinema” for sustained momentum, with the potential to match the original film’s impressive $1.36 billion global gross.
For audiences in Russia, “Super Mario: Galactic Cinema” is scheduled for release on April 9th.
