Despite significant criticism and less-than-stellar viewership numbers, Amazon Studios remains steadfast in its commitment to bring its ambitious project, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” to its originally planned conclusion.
According to reports, Amazon intends to release all five seasons of the series, fulfilling its initial contractual obligations with the heirs of J.R.R. Tolkien, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema. The original concept envisioned 50 episodes, and this plan remains unchanged. Sources indicate that Amazon’s leadership has assured the showrunners they can complete the storyline, irrespective of negative reviews, mixed ratings, and the colossal production costs.
“The Rings of Power” could become one of the most expensive television projects in history, with an estimated total budget exceeding one billion dollars, including expenditures for rights, production, and marketing. However, in the event of an early cancellation, Amazon would face substantial penalties, estimated at around $20 million for each unproduced season. This financial commitment reportedly makes completing the show a more economically viable decision than canceling it, for instance, after the third season.
The project also receives additional support from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Concurrently, previously discussed potential spin-offs will not move forward due to their prohibitively high costs.
Production for the third season has already wrapped. It is set to focus on the rise of Sauron and the forging of the One Ring. Its premiere is anticipated in 2026, with subsequent seasons, according to the current schedule, expected to be released approximately every two years.
