A former lead character artist at Bethesda, Dennis Mejillones, recently shed light on a unique issue faced by director Todd Howard: a pervasive reluctance among developers to challenge his vision.
In a discussion with Kiwi Talkz, Mejillones, who worked at Bethesda until 2021, explained that Howard was often surrounded by “yes-men.” While acknowledging Howard as an “amazing person,” Mejillones emphasized his belief that Howard, like anyone, was not perfect and didn’t always make the best decisions.
“I can’t even count how many times I’d say to Todd, ‘Hey man, that’s not a great idea. That’s bad. You shouldn’t do that,'” Mejillones recounted. He added that there were other instances where he might have remained silent but thought, “Hmm, I don’t think that’s a particularly good decision.” However, he made it a point to voice his concerns when he felt the situation was serious.
Mejillones elaborated that many staff members simply feared saying “no” to Todd Howard. He believes this dynamic ultimately hindered the development process and Howard himself. It’s important to note, however, that since Mejillones’ departure in 2021, the internal culture at Bethesda Game Studios may have evolved.
