It’s a rare occurrence for an older, theoretically less powerful console to win a performance battle against a brand-new “Pro” model. However, according to expert analysis, a recent update for Assassin’s Creed Unity has made the game look significantly better on Xbox Series X than on PS5 Pro.
The key factor is resolution: while Sony’s device renders the image at 1296p, Microsoft’s console pushes out 1620p. In a game that doesn’t utilize modern anti-aliasing techniques (TAA), these additional pixels make a colossal difference in image clarity.
The “humiliation” for the Japanese giant doesn’t end there. Although the PS5 Pro maintains a slightly more stable 60 frames per second, the Xbox Series X possesses a “hidden weapon” in the form of system-level VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support for backward compatibility. Sony has yet to introduce this feature for older games, meaning any minor frame drops on Xbox remain imperceptible to the eye. As a result, Arno’s adventures on the Series X appear not only sharper but also smoother.
For Xbox Series S owners, the news is less enthusiastic: resolution increased only to 960p, but the console consistently delivers 60 FPS. It seems that even ten years after its release, Unity is still capable of pushing modern chips to their limits, reminding us that raw power isn’t everything.
