Baldur's Gate 3: How the Reputation System Streamlined Development and Character Reactions

The developers successfully conveyed character reactions without resorting to writing endless additional dialogues.

Recently, Baldur's Gate 3 writer Kevin VanOrd spoke with EDGE magazine, revealing key details about the creation of the acclaimed cRPG. He specifically highlighted the game's innovative reputation system, where companions either approve or disapprove of the protagonist's actions, directly influencing their relationship dynamics.

Given the immense freedom granted to players in Baldur's Gate 3, it would have been nearly impossible to craft unique reactions for every conceivable event. To overcome this monumental challenge, Larian Studios devised the approval and disapproval system.

"We can't have every character react to every situation — otherwise, we'd be developing the game forever," VanOrd explained.

These simple yet effective "character approves / disapproves" reactions enabled Baldur's Gate 3's developers to vividly illustrate what characters were feeling, significantly reducing the need for an overwhelming amount of new dialogue writing.
