Brie Larson: Hollywood Must Learn from the Gaming Industry
Actress Brie Larson believes that the film and television industries should actively seek inspiration from the dynamic world of video games. The star shared her compelling thoughts during an appearance on Fandango's "Seen on the Screen" podcast.
Larson, widely recognized for her portrayal of Captain Marvel, underscored that the gaming community today significantly surpasses the collective audience of traditional films and series. She observed that while society readily engages in discussions about books or cinematic works, conversations about favorite video games are notably less frequent, despite compelling statistics that suggest otherwise.
The gaming community is far larger than the worlds of film and television... People frequently ask, "What film have you seen?" or "What book are you reading?", but they less often inquire, "What video game are you currently playing?" I believe we'd be astonished to discover just how many people are actively engaged in gaming.
She further elaborated that for years, the video game industry has extensively adopted techniques and narrative structures from cinema. Now, she argues, the time has come for a reciprocal exchange, with the film industry acknowledging what it can learn from games.
Video games have drawn so much from cinema, and I think it's time for us in the film industry to acknowledge what we can learn from video games.
According to the acclaimed actress, the video game industry has firmly established itself as a dominant and integral part of contemporary culture. To remain relevant and keep pace with modern trends, Hollywood must recognize this undeniable fact and adapt accordingly.
