Square Enix has announced a collaboration with Google to integrate Gemini artificial intelligence into the popular game Dragon Quest X. An upcoming update will introduce players to the "Chatty Slime," an interactive companion that will communicate with them using an AI-generated voice, aiming to alleviate loneliness within the game world.

Takashi Anzai from Square Enix explained that communication with the Slime will be fully automated in terms of voice generation. He added that the AI will not only maintain dialogue but also analyze in-game information to dynamically react to player actions, such as congratulating them on defeating powerful enemies.

Square Enix has yet to provide details on potential limitations or behavioral guidelines for the AI. The PC and console versions of Dragon Quest X will serve as an experimental platform for the publisher in the realm of advanced technology utilization. Integrating AI for character voice acting and creating dynamic interactions with the game world is not an entirely new concept; similar approaches have previously been seen in games like Fortnite and Where Winds Meet.
