EU Mandates User-Replaceable Batteries for Nintendo Switch 2 in Europe
The European Union is exerting pressure on Nintendo to release an updated version of the Switch 2 console specifically for the European market. This new model is expected to comply with emerging environmental standards and the "right to repair" regulations. A key feature of this updated console will be the provision for users to independently replace its battery.
In line with recent EU directives, including the "right to repair" mandate and updated battery regulations, by the year 2027, consumer electronic devices equipped with batteries must be designed to allow consumers to easily replace them without requiring professional service. Consequently, the forthcoming European iteration of the Switch 2 console, alongside its accompanying Joy-Con controllers, will undergo modifications to ensure straightforward access to their battery compartments.
This anticipated change will empower console owners to safely and autonomously swap out worn-out or defective batteries. Such a capability is expected to significantly extend the operational lifespan of the devices and contribute to a reduction in electronic waste. Nintendo has yet to disclose the precise release date for this modified model.
Industry sources further indicate that similar design adjustments might eventually be implemented in other major markets, such as the United States and Japan, particularly if their respective consumer protection laws evolve to a comparable level of stringency as those in the EU.
