Insider reports indicate that the development of the remake for the beloved game Final Fantasy IX is still on an indefinite pause. Despite persistent rumors and past leaks, Square Enix has not yet restarted work on the project.

According to insider NateTheHate, there are currently no signs of forward movement on the FFIX remake. He clarified, however, that for Square Enix, such a "freeze" does not necessarily signify a definitive cancellation, and the company could potentially revisit the project in the future. Nevertheless, as of now, there have been no changes to its status.

Discussions and speculation about a remake for the iconic JRPG have been ongoing for several years, yet Square Enix has never officially announced its existence. A significant reason for belief in the project's reality stems from a major Nvidia database leak that surfaced some years ago.

This leak contained a list of many games that were unannounced at the time, a considerable number of which later materialized. These include titles like the Resident Evil 4 remake, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Kingdom Hearts IV.

Against this backdrop, the Final Fantasy IX remake stands out as one of the few projects from that extensive leak that has yet to be officially unveiled to the public. Furthermore, it remains unclear how far along development progressed before it was paused, or if it was frozen at a very early stage.

Despite the halted progress on the remake, Square Enix continues to expand the FFIX universe through other initiatives. An illustrated prequel book is currently in development, as is an animated series. The events of the animated series are set after the original game and will explore the adventures of the children of the black mage Vivi Ornitier.
