Flagship Smartphones Run AAA Games: Cyberpunk 2077 & RDR 2 Now in Your Pocket
Mobile gaming has made a breakthrough: powerful modern smartphones are now capable of running demanding PC and console games without requiring specially adapted mobile versions.
This achievement is largely due to the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. During testing, a REDMAGIC flagship phone successfully emulated and launched titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Resident Evil Requiem. Notably, Resident Evil Requiem achieved an impressive 80-90 frames per second, positioning pocket devices on par with high-performance gaming laptops.
However, such high performance comes with significant power consumption. Initial incorrect readings of 50W were later corrected to a real 24W. In comparison, Apple M5 processors in MacBooks consume less power for similar gaming tasks. Qualcomm faces a critical challenge: optimizing chip operation to prevent smartphones from overheating and draining their batteries too rapidly.
While new cooling systems, like Samsung's Heat Pass, might offer temporary relief, experts believe this addresses symptoms rather than the root cause. The primary path forward lies in enhancing the energy efficiency of the chips themselves. Despite these existing challenges, the future of mobile gaming appears highly promising: full-fledged AAA titles are becoming genuinely accessible on top-tier smartphones, bringing us closer to a powerful gaming future in our hands.
