Forza Horizon 6 to Feature Major Graphics Enhancements and Long-Awaited Window Decals
A highly requested feature by players for years has proven to be more complex to implement than many had anticipated.
Playground Games continues to advance its successful racing franchise, and Forza Horizon 6 is set to deliver a significant technological leap. Unlike previous installments, the new title is being developed with a primary focus on a single console generation, enabling developers to substantially improve visual fidelity and overall detail.
One of the key innovations is the introduction of new refraction-based shaders for headlights and taillights. According to producer Mike Bennett, this advanced technology grants lighting elements a more realistic depth and effect, including iridescent shimmer on polycarbonate surfaces. These enhancements have already been applied to over 550 vehicles, with more cars slated to receive similar updates.
The development team has also completely re-engineered the materials for all cars in the game, leading to an overall uplift in visual quality, even before any customization options are considered.
Among the most eagerly awaited additions are window decals — a feature the community has clamored for over many years. Despite its apparent simplicity, integrating this functionality required considerable effort, as each vehicle had to be specifically adapted for the new system. Now, players will have the freedom to create extensive designs that cover the entire car or subtle decorative elements, ranging from sun protection strips to miniature stickers.
Furthermore, window decals are integrated into the game's progression system: as players advance through the campaign, new graphic elements will unlock, becoming available for personalizing their vehicles. A flexible transparency system allows for full control over visibility, meaning players can even completely block the view through windows if they choose.
Forza Horizon 6 is scheduled for release on May 19 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a PlayStation 5 version slated to arrive later in the year.
