The highly anticipated film adaptation of the iconic beat 'em up game, Streets of Rage, finds itself in a precarious production standstill.
Derek Kolstad, renowned for his work on the John Wick series and the screenwriter for the Streets of Rage movie, has confirmed that while the project remains officially under development at Lionsgate, actual progress has virtually halted. In a recent interview, he characterized the project's current state as "actively inactive"—meaning development hasn't been officially cancelled, but no significant advancements are being made.
Despite the lack of momentum, Kolstad expressed his continued faith in the project. He noted the considerable time and effort he invested in crafting the script, which he considers a solid foundation for the upcoming adaptation. According to Kolstad, the film's core concept revolves around relentless, continuous action, designed to unfold with hardly any pauses, drawing inspiration from the intensity of films like 16 Blocks and The Raid.
Kolstad completed the screenplay long before Lionsgate became involved with the project in 2022. Since then, there has been minimal news regarding the adaptation, raising considerable doubts among fans and industry observers about whether the Streets of Rage movie will ultimately reach the big screen.
