Larian Director Slams Tim Sweeney's Layoff Comments, Calls It 'Corporate Rot'
The rhetoric of Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney regarding the extensive layoffs at his company has sparked a strong reaction within the gaming community. Following the recent dismissal of over a thousand Epic Games employees, Sweeney's subsequent statements were met with particular disapproval, especially from Larian Studios.
After announcing the job cuts, Sweeney attempted to frame the situation positively, stating that the job market would now be enriched with "specialists of a unique level." He emphasized that Epic's hiring standards remain high, implying that former employees are among the best in the industry. While ostensibly an attempt to support those laid off, many professionals perceived this as an insincere effort to sugarcoat serious consequences.
One of the most vocal critics was Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios. Douse openly condemned Sweeney's phrasing, calling it an attempt to "repackage" the layoff situation. He reinterpreted Sweeney's words, stating it sounded like: "I didn't fire a thousand people – I flooded the market with unique talents." According to Douse, such rhetoric is a prime example of "verbal acrobatics" and "corporate rot," indicative of a profound detachment from the real issues and struggles within the video game industry.
