New Portable PlayStation (Project Canis) Expected to Outperform Xbox Series S, Insider Claims
A full console experience is set to arrive in a portable format, as Sony's next-generation handheld console might be significantly more powerful than anticipated.
According to the well-known insider KeplerL2, the upcoming system, currently operating under the codename Project Canis, is poised to surpass the Xbox Series S in both traditional rendering (rasterization) and advanced ray tracing capabilities.
Leaked information indicates that the device's graphics subsystem will "slightly lead" the Xbox Series S in rasterization performance and "significantly outperform" it when it comes to ray tracing. This potential advantage would position Sony's new portable console as one of the most high-performance devices in its class.
The rumored specifications for Project Canis include:
- 4 Zen 6c cores
- 2 energy-efficient Zen 6 LP cores
- 16 RDNA 5 Compute Units (CUs)
- 24GB of LPDDR5X memory (utilizing a 192-bit bus)
- A compact 135 mm² chip, manufactured using TSMC's advanced 3nm process
Particular emphasis is also placed on image quality. The insider suggests that a new version of Sony's proprietary upscaling technology, PSSR 3, will deliver superior visual fidelity compared to competing solutions. This includes the "DLSS Light" technology from NVIDIA, which is reportedly expected in the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
