Nintendo Switch 2 to Get New Version — Battery Change Ahead
The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, widely regarded as the successor to the current popular console, is reportedly poised for an early hardware revision, potentially even before its official market debut. While there have been prior indications that Nintendo would continue its practice of releasing multiple hardware versions, similar to the original Switch, new information suggests this upcoming update might be less significant than initially expected.
According to the Japanese publication Nikkei, Nintendo plans to adapt to new European Union requirements. In response to the EU's 'right to repair' law, which was adopted in July 2024 and is set to take effect from August 1st this year, future versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature an easily removable and replaceable battery. This change is intended to significantly extend the device's lifespan, allowing users to replace worn-out batteries rather than having to purchase an entirely new console.
While such a modification could potentially impact the console's cooling system and overall thickness, the manufacturer is reportedly actively working to maintain the Switch 2's current form factor. It is noted that this decision is an internal initiative by Nintendo, and according to Nikkei, the company may release this updated version not only in Europe but also in other key regions, including Japan and the United States. Specific release dates for this new version have not yet been announced.
