Previously, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang staunchly defended the DLSS 5 technology against critics, asserting it transcended mere post-processing. He claimed it analyzed and "understood" the scene's composition, performing generation at the geometry level.

However, blogger Daniel Owen recently had the opportunity to question Nvidia evangelist Jacob Freeman regarding DLSS 5, uncovering the actual mechanics of the technology. It turns out that Huang's earlier descriptions were far from accurate.

Freeman clarified that DLSS 5 operates exclusively with already rendered 2D frames and motion vectors, utilizing these for subsequent generation and maintaining image stability. The technology does not have access to 3D geometry or scene depth. Instead, it processes visual data solely from the final 2D image output by the game engine, effectively functioning as an advanced "AI filter" rather than a geometry generator.
