Owlcat Games, the studio developing the upcoming title The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, has openly stated its utilization of generative artificial intelligence in the game's production. The company clarifies that these advanced tools are exclusively deployed during the initial phases of development, primarily to streamline processes and facilitate rapid prototyping.
In discussions with journalists, representatives from Owlcat Games confirmed the integration of generative AI, accompanied by a significant distinction. According to PR Manager Katarina Popp, such tools are strictly confined to the early stages of the development cycle.
We do not use AI to create assets that will appear in the final version of the game. It is needed for prototyping, testing ideas, and creating temporary placeholders, which are then completely replaced.
— Katarina Popp, Owlcat Games.
The studio further explained that AI assists in accelerating various technical experiments. This includes tasks such as visualizing how a 2D concept might translate into a 3D environment or efficiently exploring different color schemes. Developers are keen to emphasize that all finalized game content — including the script, dialogue, and voice acting — is entirely produced by human creators, with no involvement from AI in the ultimate product.
