PlayStation's "Breaking Bad"? Sony's Secret Plans Leaked
Confidential Sony documents have leaked online, revealing both canceled and upcoming projects from Firesprite studio, part of PlayStation Studios. These leaks offer a glimpse into intriguing ideas that never saw the light of day, as well as current ambitious developments.
Around 2017, Firesprite was working on a unique VR project set in the "Breaking Bad" universe. Intended not as a traditional game but rather a narrative "cinematic adventure," it would immerse players in the role of a brilliant chemist, allowing them to explore iconic locations from the series, from the New Mexico deserts to Walter White's garden. Despite the involvement of series creator Vince Gilligan, the project was canceled after a year due to technological and financial challenges typical of early VR development.
Between 2018 and 2020, the studio developed a prototype for a sci-fi horror game. Concept art suggests a title in the vein of Dead Space, with a focus on body horror and futuristic technology. Artists confirmed this was a completely new franchise, not a sequel to The Persistence as many had speculated. This project also met the fate of other canceled games, including a previously mentioned Twisted Metal battle royale.
Despite these setbacks, Firesprite is actively developing two major projects using Unreal Engine 5. "Project Heartbreak" is generating significant excitement, rumored to be the highly anticipated sequel to the hit game Until Dawn. Concurrently, the studio is recruiting staff for another title known as "Project Pillar."
