Sony and Honda Cancel Afeela Car Project Featuring PlayStation Remote Play
Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), the joint venture between Sony and Honda, has officially ceased the development and planned launch of its AFEELA 1 model. This electric vehicle was notably intended to feature integrated PlayStation Remote Play functionality and was planned as the second car in the Afeela brand lineup.
Just late last year, both companies had affirmed that the project was on track, with expectations for deliveries in California to commence by 2026. However, the overall strategy has now been re-evaluated, indicating that the vehicle will not enter the market as originally envisioned.
According to SHM, the decision followed internal discussions between Sony and Honda, occurring shortly after Honda revised its broader electrification strategy. These changes mean that SHM will no longer have access to certain technologies and assets that were initially expected from Honda. Consequently, the project for AFEELA 1 has lost its "viable path" to market in its previous form.
Despite this specific model's cancellation, Sony Honda Mobility itself is not being dissolved. The companies are reportedly continuing to discuss their future business plans and explore potential new directions for their ongoing collaboration.
