Sony to Integrate FSR Frame Generation into PlayStation: First Details
Mark Cerny, a key architect for PlayStation, is currently working on the development of a new console. It appears that a close collaboration between Sony and AMD will lead to future platforms, such as the PS6 or even an updated PS5 Pro, supporting FSR Frame Generation technology.
AMD's FSR Frame Generation is an innovative machine-learning-based technology that generates intermediate frames between those already rendered. In practice, this significantly enhances visual smoothness and creates the impression of higher performance without needing to render every single frame from scratch.
These speculations were confirmed by Mark Cerny himself, who disclosed details about Sony and AMD's joint efforts under a project codenamed Amethyst.
Cerny commented: "I want to clarify a few points regarding our collaboration with AMD: the new PSSR technology utilizes the same jointly developed foundational algorithm as FSR Redstone for upscaling. Similarly, FSR Frame Generation is based on technology created together by us. I am very pleased with the progress, and a similar frame generation library is bound to appear on PlayStation platforms at some point."
However, Cerny did not specify which particular console he was referring to.
On this matter, he added: "These are excellent questions... I can only say that we have no new hardware releases planned for this year. I will gladly share more details in the future."
Based on these statements, it is presumed that this technology is primarily being developed for the PlayStation 6, though its potential inclusion in the PS5 Pro is not entirely ruled out.
