Todd Howard Explains Why Oblivion Remaster Retains Original Bugs and Quirks
Upon the release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, players quickly noted the persistence of many familiar technical glitches and distinctive "peculiarities" from the original game.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Todd Howard, the acclaimed game director, clarified that this decision was largely intentional. He explained that certain bugs proved exceedingly difficult to rectify, and there was often little assurance that players would even attempt to exploit them.
Howard provided an example of such a persistent issue:
For instance, the bug that allows you to stand on objects is incredibly hard to fix.
Beyond technical flaws, Howard also specifically highlighted an amusing audio blooper. In one particular scene, a voice actor began delivering a line, then paused to request another take, only for both the initial attempt and the subsequent re-take to inadvertently make it into the final game.
Regarding these uncorrected elements, Howard expressed his sentiment:
You know what – it's fine. I actually quite like it when the voiceover has a little stumble. Yes, let those kinds of things stay in. It's alright, it's part of the game's unique charm.
This approach suggests a deliberate choice to preserve some of the original game's unique character and charm, even if it means carrying over a few imperfections.
