TSMC Sells Out Unbuilt Production Capacity: Not a Bubble, But a Geopolitical Imperative

Major customers, including Qualcomm, are actively seeking to diversify their manufacturing footprint and secure 'backup' production sites outside of Taiwan.

Reports indicate that TSMC's operations in the United States are currently overwhelmed with orders, leaving virtually no available capacity for new clients.

There's particularly high interest in the TSMC Arizona project, where the company is rapidly expanding its production capabilities. However, sources suggest that the pace of expansion is insufficient to meet the demands of its largest clients, such as NVIDIA, Apple, and AMD.

The situation has reached a point where customers are pre-booking capacity that hasn't even been constructed yet. Specifically, the fourth factory, designed for 2nm or A16 chip production by the end of the decade, is already fully reserved.

Analysts attribute this surge in demand for American facilities to escalating geopolitical risks. Prominent customers, including Qualcomm, are keen to diversify their supply chains and establish 'contingency' manufacturing sites beyond Taiwan. In this light, TSMC's international expansion, particularly in the U.S., is becoming a crucial factor in building trust with American corporations.
