Woman & Boyfriend Sentenced for Esports Tournament Fraud
The deceptive esports achievements of a young woman have led to a conviction for fraud in a recent court ruling.
Last year, during an Arena of Valor tournament, organizers grew suspicious when the activity displayed on Varasi Naraphat's ("Tokyogurl") monitor didn't align with her physical movements. Further investigation revealed that she was not actually playing; instead, her boyfriend, identified as Cheerio, was remotely controlling her game.
The case was brought before a court, where Varasi "Tokyogurl" Naraphat and Cheerio were found guilty of violating Thailand's Computer-Related Crime Act.
Initially, the couple received a sentence of six months imprisonment. However, the judge reduced the punishment by half to three months and allowed them to serve their time outside of prison, citing their full confession to the charges. The specific location and conditions for their confinement are expected to be determined at a later date.
