Games for the upcoming console are expected to occupy less storage space thanks to advanced neural texture compression technology.
Insider Kepler_L2, known for accurate leaks concerning AMD products, has shared new details regarding the potential configuration of the PlayStation 6. According to his insights, the base version of the device might feature a 1TB SSD and completely forgo a traditional disc drive.
Previously, the same source estimated the console’s manufacturing cost at approximately $760. While Sony has theoretically been able to subsidize devices and release them at lower prices, such as around $699 for previous generations, the insider suggests this scenario is not guaranteed for the PS6.
Users’ interest was particularly piqued by questions regarding the storage configuration and the presence of a disc drive. In response, Kepler_L2 clarified that his estimations are based on a version equipped with a 1TB SSD and no optical drive. This revelation has caused some concern among the audience, given the rapidly increasing file sizes of modern games.
The insider explained that Sony’s potential decision to omit the disc drive and opt for a smaller SSD could be an effort to reduce manufacturing costs. Furthermore, he noted that the support for neural network texture compression within the PS6’s SDK could significantly reduce game sizes – potentially even more efficiently than the current generation.
