Contrary to many initial forecasts, Marathon did not experience a launch as problematic as Concord and managed to build a respectable player base on Steam. However, Bungie’s project may have underperformed for Sony: analysts estimate sales of 1.2 million copies, with only 19% of those coming from PS5.
Despite these initial performance indicators, Bungie has announced its plans to support the game for many years to come. In a recent PC performance guide, the developers reassured fans that they would not abandon the extraction shooter.
“We are in this for the long haul with Marathon. We look forward to many years of consistent improvements across every aspect of the game.”
The developers further explained that just as the team refined the game’s visuals following initial player criticism, Marathon’s PC performance will also see significant improvements over time. While specific details are currently undisclosed, the studio confirmed that both long-term enhancements and immediate patches aimed at optimizing CPU performance are actively in development.
In the past week, the game’s peak concurrent player count on Steam did not exceed 45,000.
