Inon Zur: Starfield Was Ahead of Its Time, Will Become Legendary

Renowned composer Inon Zur, celebrated for his work on numerous video game soundtracks, recently shared his insights into his contribution to Starfield. He expressed strong confidence that, given time, the gaming community will fully appreciate the project, which he believes was simply ahead of its time.

Crafting the Sound of Starfield

Zur highlighted his work on Starfield as one of his most cherished projects, placing it in the same esteemed category as his scores for Fallout 4, Rise of the Ronin, and Syberia. When creating the musical landscape for Starfield, the composer aimed to achieve a delicate balance: blending classic “cosmic” auditory elements with the development of a distinctly new musical language.

His inspiration stemmed from the profound sense of a vast, almost motionless cosmos, within which countless swift and dynamic events simultaneously unfold. This included the movement of spacecraft, the appearance and disappearance of objects, and the constant flux of space itself. Zur deliberately steered clear of directly mimicking well-known composers of science fiction music, though he openly acknowledges the inevitable influence of masters like John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Vangelis, and Igor Stravinsky. His paramount objective was to translate the core emotions and spirit of the game into sound. He firmly believes that it was the unique conceptual idea and the overarching mood that rendered Starfield’s soundtrack both original and widely accessible to its listeners.

A Vision for the Future

Despite Starfield not achieving the immediate, widespread success of titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout 4 upon its release, Zur remains convinced that public perception of the game will evolve. He theorizes that many players were simply not prepared for such a massive, profound, and unique project at the time it launched.

The composer also offered high praise for Todd Howard, the director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, describing him as one of the most creative and inspiring figures in the industry. According to Zur, Howard possesses an exceptionally clear vision and expertly balances granting creative freedom to his team with skillfully guiding their work to align with his overarching concept.

Zur’s conviction is that it is precisely this unwavering belief in his vision that will ultimately secure Starfield a place among legendary games. He suggests that projects of this nature often require a considerable amount of time for audiences to fully grasp and appreciate their innovative ideas and intricate depths.
