Kyoto Animation has released a new trailer and key visual for its upcoming anime series, “The History of Electricity in the Twentieth Century.” The highly anticipated show is set to premiere globally on July 5, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
The story transports viewers to an alternate version of Kyoto in the early 20th century. In this timeline, technological progress veered heavily towards steam power, leaving electricity as a distant, unfulfilled dream. The city is perpetually shrouded in smoke, and the very concept of an “electric era” seems almost unattainable.
At the heart of the narrative are two teenagers grappling with profound loss. Sakamoto Kihachi mourns his brother, with whom he once shared dreams of an electrified future. Momokawa Inako grieves for her deceased mother but strives to maintain her composure. Their paths converge, marking the beginning of a shared quest. Together, they embark on a journey to uncover the “20th Century Electrical Records,” hoping to ignite a change that will transform their world.
The anime is an adaptation of Hiro Yuki’s light novel, featuring illustrations by Kazumi Ikeda. Minoru Ota is helming the project as director, while Tatsuhiko Urahat is responsible for the script.
