Early leaks reveal performance details for the upcoming PS6 and Xbox Project Helix consoles. Digital Foundry’s analysis suggests that Microsoft’s potential computational power advantage may not be the decisive factor.
Both consoles are reportedly being developed with AMD, utilizing Zen 6 CPU architecture and RDNA 5 graphics. However, Xbox is rumored to feature a 192-bit memory bus compared to the PS6’s 160-bit, potentially giving Microsoft’s system higher bandwidth.
CPU configurations also differ. Project Helix is attributed with three performance Zen 6 cores and eight power-efficient Zen 6c cores. Meanwhile, the PS6 is rumored to primarily use Zen 6c cores, coupled with additional low-power blocks.
Graphically, Xbox might feature up to 68 RDNA 5 compute units (CUs), while the PS6 could have around 54. However, such comparisons don’t always accurately reflect real-world gaming performance, as demonstrated by the current generation where the PS5 (36 CUs) effectively competes with the Xbox Series X (52 CUs).
Microsoft is reportedly emphasizing a powerful NPU for AI tasks, boasting around 110 TOPS. Sony, conversely, is said to leverage its GPU for machine learning acceleration. Both systems will support image reconstruction technologies like PSSR and FSR, developed by Sony and AMD under Project Amethyst.
Digital Foundry points out that even if Xbox proves approximately 20% more powerful, the difference in gameplay will be barely noticeable. In the era of dynamic resolution and ML-based upscaling, extra power often translates merely to a slightly higher internal rendering resolution.
Analysts further suggest that Sony and Microsoft might adopt different strategic approaches. The PS6 could remain a traditional console, focusing on affordability and innovative gaming experiences. Project Helix, conversely, might evolve into a “console PC,” merging the Xbox and Windows ecosystems.
Should these leaks prove accurate, the next console generation promises to be a significant departure from the traditional PlayStation versus Xbox rivalry.
