Hideki Kamiya, a veteran game designer and former lead on Resident Evil 2, has once again shared his humorous take on the horror genre. Despite his significant contribution to the iconic survival horror series, Kamiya admits he isn’t a fan of horror elements himself, preferring to focus on puzzles and combat mechanics.
During an informal discussion at Clovers studio, Kamiya jokingly suggested adding a “non-scary mode” to future Resident Evil titles (referencing a hypothetical “Resident Evil Requiem”). In this imagined mode, zombies would appear cute, blood splatters would transform into cherry blossom petals, and the eerie soundtrack would be replaced by upbeat, positive music.
“Listen, I just want to enjoy the puzzles… the puzzles and the battles. I don’t need all that scary part.”
— Hideki Kamiya, Industry Veteran
This isn’t the first time Kamiya has voiced his aversion to horror, consistently advocating for an option that allows players to engage with the core gameplay in a lighter, more enjoyable atmosphere. He believes such a mode would allow players to concentrate purely on the puzzles and battles without the intimidating elements.
