Valve Drops New Counter-Strike 2 Cases Amid Loot Box Lawsuit, Dataminer Suggests

It appears that Valve is significantly altering its approach to item distribution within Counter-Strike 2.

The company recently faced legal action concerning its use of loot boxes. In response to this, a prominent dataminer within the Counter-Strike 2 community, known as Thour, has shared his informed perspective.

Thour speculates that Valve has made the decision to abandon traditional randomized case drops in CS2 entirely, opting instead for a complete transition to a “terminal” based system.

Unlike conventional cases, which immediately reward players with random cosmetic items upon opening, the “terminal” mechanic operates differently. When a player opens a terminal, they are presented with an offer to purchase a specific, randomly selected item. Players then have the option to either buy that item directly or refresh the offer a limited number of times to view a different selection.

Thour’s theory is largely based on the recent March Counter-Strike 2 update, which introduced a terminal featuring the “Dead Hand” collection.

Now that the ‘Terminal’ includes a collection of gloves and knives, I am even more convinced that there will be no more cases. Rest in peace, cases: August 14, 2013 to March 31, 2025.
