Brandon Sanderson Explains Why Book Adaptations Often Fail and Details His Work on ‘Mistborn’

Brandon Sanderson discusses book adaptations

Renowned author Brandon Sanderson, celebrated for his *Mistborn* and *Stormlight Archive* series, has shared his insights into why book adaptations frequently fall short. He attributes this primary issue to a fundamental misunderstanding of the distinct narrative approaches of literature and film.

Sanderson cited “The Golden Compass” as an example of a failed adaptation, where creators attempted to cram too many details, resulting in a superficial retelling of the plot. Conversely, he highlighted successful adaptations such as “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” *The Lord of the Rings*, and the early seasons of *Game of Thrones*. Their success, he believes, lies in the creators’ ability to condense the material and focus on core elements while preserving the essential spirit of the original work.

Sanderson’s core conclusion emphasizes that an adaptation must capture the “soul” of the story, but isn’t obligated to reproduce every single detail. It’s crucial to identify the specific narrative the film aims to tell and construct all other content around it.

He applies this very principle to his work on the *Mistborn* adaptation. While the books equally divide the narrative between Vin and Kelsier, Sanderson has decided to primarily focus on Vin’s story for the screen adaptation. He believes this approach will help circumvent common adaptation errors.

According to data from the author’s personal website, the script is approximately 42% complete, marking substantial progress from the 2% reported in early February when the adaptation was announced.

It’s worth noting that this project is part of a series of adaptations set within the Cosmere universe. A streaming platform has secured a deal with Sanderson, under which he is deeply involved in the development as a screenwriter, producer, and consultant, and holds final approval rights over key creative decisions. Details regarding production timelines and cast are not yet public. In addition to the *Mistborn* films, a *Stormlight Archive* television series is also planned.
