Overwatch Creator Jeff Kaplan Details Activision Pressure and Layoff Threats Leading to Blizzard Departure

Jeff Kaplan, the esteemed creator of the Overwatch series and a long-time veteran of Blizzard Entertainment, has re-emerged in the public eye after several years of silence. While introducing his new project, the multiplayer survival game The Legend of California, Kaplan shared an in-depth account of the circumstances surrounding his departure from Blizzard after a distinguished 19-year career.

Kaplan joined Blizzard in the early 2000s, initially serving as a tester for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. He later rose to prominence as the game director for World of Warcraft and ultimately became the lead developer for Overwatch.

According to Kaplan, his separation from the studio was a profound personal blow. He confessed to still holding warm feelings for Blizzard, but only after leaving did he fully grasp the extent of the pain. He likened the experience to a grieving process, admitting he struggled for a long time to come to terms with no longer working at the studio where he had envisioned spending his entire career.

A pivotal incident that spurred his decision to leave was a meeting with Activision Blizzard’s financial leadership. Kaplan recounted how a financial director presented him with a stringent annual revenue target for Overwatch, explicitly threatening mass layoffs if the game failed to meet the specified performance metrics.

Kaplan detailed that he was given a precise date and a specific revenue figure the project was expected to generate. Failure to achieve this, the executive allegedly stated, could result in the termination of approximately a thousand employees, with the responsibility for these actions placed squarely on him as the project leader.

Although Kaplan did not explicitly name the financial director, Dennis Durkin held that position at the time, departing the company in May 2021—just one month after Kaplan’s own exit.

Following his departure from Blizzard, Kaplan founded his new studio, Kintsugiyama. The name draws inspiration from the Japanese art of Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold. Kaplan explained that the concept symbolizes individuals in the industry who have endured difficult professional challenges but emerged even stronger.
